2011 World Sledge Hockey Challenge is coming to London!
April 4, 2011
The 2011 World Sledge Hockey Challenge is coming to the Western Fair Sports Center in April. You have an opportunity to experience the top four sledge hockey teams in the world in your own city. Canada, which won gold in 2007 in Kelowna, B.C. and 2008 in Charlottetown, P.E.I. before settling for silver last year in Charlottetown, will be joined by sledge hockey powers Japan, Norway and the United States. The four teams competing in London were the top four finishers at the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver, B.C.
The sport of sledge hockey, an innovative team sport that incorporates the same rules and discipline structure as able-bodied hockey, was invented by three Swedish wheelchair athletes on a frozen lake in Stockholm in 1961. In 1994, sledge hockey was introduced as a demonstration sport at the Paralympic Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway. The sport has since become a full medal event at the Paralympic Winter Games. Canada has participated in sledge hockey in each Paralympic Winter Games and is now under the umbrella of Hockey Canada.
The London region is a hotbed in the country for sledge hockey development. The London Blizzards Sledge Hockey team hosts the largest annual sledge hockey tournament in the world and is proud to partner to host the 2011 World Sledge Hockey Challenge.
If you have never experienced sledge hockey before, I strongly encourage you to come out and watch this fast paced, aggressive sport in person.
